New research has shown the potential for using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment for improving the memory in older adults.
In fact the study by Northwestern Medical School researchers demonstrated that stimulating the brain’s memory center – the hippocampus – with electromagnetic pulses could improve the memory of older adults to the normal level of young adults.
Lead investigator Joel Voss, Associate Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said:
“Older people’s memory got better up to the level that we could no longer tell them apart from younger people. They got substantially better.”
He continued to explain how targeting the hippocampus worked to influence memory:
“It’s the part of the brain that links two unrelated things together into a memory, like the place you left your keys or your new neighbor’s name. Older adults often complain about having trouble with this.”
He continued to stress how ground-breaking these results are, saying:
“There is no previous evidence that the specific memory impairments and brain dysfunction seen in older adults can be rescued using brain stimulation or any other method.”
The exciting study appears in the Neurology journal.
Next steps for the researchers are to continue tests to include patients with mild cognitive impairment, the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease. They will also explore how long the effects of treatment could last and the influence of additional stimulation.
Where Can I Get This Treatment?
It will be a while before this treatment is available to the public, as this is an early research study in this area. However, it does show the tremendous potential of TMS treatment for a variety of conditions.

TMS Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy
For patients who have tried medication and talking therapies without success, it offers an alternative treatment solution which involves no medication or unpleasant interventions.
Magnetic impulses are used to stimulate or modulate the function of neural circuits in the brain which are overactive or underactive – a process known as ‘neuromodulation’.
Treatment is not instant, but over a course of daily sessions, patients can find that they quite suddenly start to feel more positive, balanced and more like their old selves.
