OCD is an anxiety-related disorder. It affects approximately 1.2% of the population.

Someone suffering from OCD will have repetitive or obsessional thoughts, images or feelings that leave them feeling anxious. This will cause the person to carry out repetitive behaviours, actions or rituals a number of times, in order to ease this anxiety. E.g. Repeatedly checking the gas hob is turned off.

It is generally accepted that there are 4 main categories of OCD:

  • Checking
  • Contamination
  • Hoarding
  • Rumination/Intrusive thoughts

The symptoms of OCD include both obsessive and compulsive behaviours:

Obsessive thoughts:

  • Repeated unwanted ideas
  • Fear of contamination
  • Persistent sexual thoughts
  • Aggressive impulses
  • Images of hurting someone you love
  • Thoughts that you might be harmed

Compulsive behaviours:

  • Constant checking
  • Mental rituals
  • Repeated cleaning
  • Arranging items to be a certain way

OCD Treatment

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Exposure and Response Prevention
  • Antidepressants

Unfortunately, for a lot of OCD sufferers, none of the above therapies or medications work and so they are left with nowhere to turn for treatment.

rTMS is a new therapy aimed at targeting the specific brain circuits affected by OCD. Many trials have supported the significant effect that rTMS has as a treatment form of treatment for OCD.  Smart TMS has treated many OCD sufferers successfully with TMS.
