GQ Magazine: Loneliness at Christmas
Christmas 2018 is now over and 2019 is here, but are you looking back on the festive season with fondness or sadness?
Many people find Christmas a struggle and one of the key issues can be that it accentuates feelings of loneliness, an issue commonly associated with depression.
GQ Magazine’s online website covered the issue in an article entitled:
“How to overcome loneliness at Christmas”
The feature explained that the links between loneliness and mental health are complex. Yet the issue can become worse as people who suffer from feeling lonely tend to separate themselves from others and spend more time alone, which lead to them feeling worse rather than better.
GQ Online shared the results of a mental health foundation survey from 2010, which on a sample of 2,256 people, showed that:
- 4 out of 10 had felt depressed as they felt alone
- This statistic was higher among women
- 1 in 10 had sought help for feeling lonely
- 1 in 3 would be embarrassed to admit to feeling lonely
How to Overcome Loneliness
The feature contained expert advice from Smart TMS Technician Abie
1. Psychological Therapies
- Help from clinical psychologists and psychiatrists or trained counsellors
- Talking therapies can help to develop self-acceptance or overcome difficulties
2. Modern Technology
- Use the internet and social networking to reconnect with people
- Find and get involved more with community events and social groups
3. Volunteering
- Studies show that volunteering tends to make people happier
- As well as helping others, volunteers can build their own social network
4. Exercise
- Getting active is proven to stimulate the brain and body
- Choose an activity you’ll enjoy e.g. walking, cycling, yoga or gym classes
The article concludes with TMS expert Abie’s final piece of advice:
“Don’t stress if it takes a little while to see a positive change in your mindset – take small steps that will change your behaviour over time.”

TMS Treatment for Severe Depression
If you have long term serious depression, then you may be feeling that the coming year marks time to make a change and try a new treatment. Christmas and New Year can be a real turning point for patients and their families, where they decide that enough is enough.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy at Smart TMS
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a new approach to treating very difficult mental health conditions and offers hope to patients whose condition is not improved by self-help, medication or therapy.
TMS is a non-surgical and medication-free treatment which uses magnetic pulses to work directly on the areas of the brain affected by the mental health condition being treated. This could be depression, addiction, PTSD, OCD or anxiety.
Patients have typically spent years on antidepressants and also tried CBT or other talking therapies before finding out about TMS, but many find that this helps where other treatments have not worked.
